Field Stones

Stones are created by some soil-working operations and can damage machinery if left on the field.

How stones appear

Some soil-working operations bring stones to the surface. Large stones are best removed with a stone picker; small stones can be pushed back down by a soil roller.

Why remove them

Leaving stones can increase wear/damage to equipment. Stone handling is therefore mainly a maintenance decision rather than a direct yield stage.

Procedure

  1. After cultivation/ploughing, inspect the stone state.
  2. For small stones, roll them back into the soil if the timing fits the crop workflow.
  3. For larger stones, use a stone picker before seeding/harvest traffic.
  4. Unload collected stones at a suitable selling/processing point if desired.

Equipment & tools

Open an equipment page for what the machine does, how to set it up and how to operate it.

Alternative options

Roll small stones
Useful when rolling is already part of the crop cycle.
Stone picker
Removes stones entirely and handles larger stones.
