Soil Working Overview

How ploughs, cultivators, disc harrows, power harrows, subsoilers and direct-drill seeders overlap, and when each is useful.

First question: does the field require ploughing?

If field information says ploughing is required, use a plough or another tool that the game counts as satisfying that requirement. If not, use a faster cultivation route or direct seeding. Do not add a heavy pass just because it is traditional.

Cultivator vs disc harrow vs power harrow

A cultivator is the general-purpose seedbed tool. Disc harrows are usually faster/lighter and work shallow. Power harrows create a seedbed and are often paired with seeding combinations. Tool choice mainly changes working width, speed, power demand, stones and whether another pass is needed.

Subsoilers and direct drills

A subsoiler works deeply and some models can satisfy ploughing-style requirements. A direct-drill seeder can place seed without a separate cultivation pass when its shop description says direct seeding is supported.

Procedure

  1. Inspect the field for ploughing requirement and stones.
  2. If ploughing is required, choose a plough/subsoiler route that satisfies it.
  3. If ploughing is not required, choose cultivator/disc/power-harrow or direct drill.
  4. Match tractor power and ballast to the implement.
  5. Work straight overlapping passes; lift the implement at headlands.
  6. After soil work, inspect for stones and decide whether to roll/pick them.
  7. Seed/plant next, unless the selected seeder performed soil work in the same pass.

Alternative options

Traditional
Plough/cultivate first, then seed.
Reduced passes
Use a direct-drill seeder or a combined power-harrow/seeder when compatible.
Subsoiler route
Use a subsoiler where it satisfies the field requirement and suits the crop cycle.
