Making Hay

Turn mown grass into hay with a tedder, then collect it loose or bale it for livestock and TMR production.

Grass becomes hay by tedding

Mow mature grass, then run a tedder over the cut material. The tedder dries/converts the cut grass into hay. Windrowing afterwards is optional but makes collection much easier.

Storage form

Collect hay loose with a forage wagon or make hay bales. Bales are convenient for TMR because they can be loaded into the mixer with a bale fork and the amount is easy to estimate from bale volume.

Procedure

  1. Mow mature grass.
  2. Run a tedder over all cut grass until it has become hay.
  3. Use a windrower to gather the hay into fewer, larger rows.
  4. Collect with a forage wagon or bale it.
  5. Store under cover/in a compatible storage system or move it to the livestock area.
  6. For TMR, load hay into the forage mixer while keeping the hay percentage inside the valid recipe range.

Equipment & tools

Open an equipment page for what the machine does, how to set it up and how to operate it.

Alternative options

Loose hay
Use a forage wagon.
Hay bales
Use a baler; bales are convenient for storage and mixer loading.

Practical tips

  • Windrowing is not mandatory for the material conversion, but it greatly reduces collection passes.
