Making Silage

Produce silage from grass or chaff for sale, biogas, or total mixed ration.

Route A: wrapped grass bales

Mow grass, optionally windrow it, bale it and wrap compatible grass bales. Wrapped bales ferment into silage. This route is easy to meter into a mixer and avoids bunker compaction.

Route B: bunker silo

Collect grass/chaff and tip it into a bunker. Drive over the pile repeatedly until compaction reaches 100%, then cover the bunker and wait for fermentation. Uncover and remove silage with a loader/bucket or compatible pickup system.

Making chaff

A forage harvester chops compatible crops such as corn into chaff. The harvester has no normal grain tank, so a trailer must travel beside it to receive the material.

Procedure

  1. Choose wrapped-bale or bunker route.
  2. Produce grass or chaff.
  3. For bales: bale grass, wrap compatible bales and allow fermentation.
  4. For bunker: deliver material into the bunker, level it, compact to 100%, cover and allow fermentation.
  5. After fermentation, collect the silage.
  6. Use it for cattle feed/TMR, a biogas route, sale or another production chain.

Alternative options

Wrapped grass bales
Simple storage and transport, good for modest volumes.
Bunker silo
High capacity, requires compaction and loader work.
Chaff
Large-volume forage harvesting route, often paired with maize.
