Fertilising
How to reach the full fertilisation state using purchased fertiliser or farm-produced nutrients.
What counts as full fertilisation
Ordinary arable crops normally accept two fertiliser stages, and there must be a crop growth stage between the two applications. Grass is normally a one-stage exception. Manure/slurry equipment may offer double application rate, trading working speed for reaching full fertilisation in one pass.
Choose the nutrient source
Solid fertiliser uses a spreader; liquid fertiliser/herbicide-capable equipment uses a sprayer. Manure, slurry and digestate use their dedicated applicators. Oilseed radish can supply a fertiliser stage when it is grown and cultivated into the soil.
Avoid wasting product
Check the fertilisation map/field info before every pass. Do not cover already fully fertilised ground. If crop destruction is enabled and the crop has emerged, use a suitable narrow-tyre tractor where possible.
Procedure
- Check current fertilisation state.
- Choose solid, liquid, manure, slurry/digestate or an oilseed-radish route.
- Fill the correct applicator.
- Set an appropriate working width/rate if the machine supports it.
- Apply the first stage evenly across the field.
- Wait for at least one growth-stage change before the second ordinary fertiliser pass.
- Apply the second stage only to areas that still need it.
- Confirm the field is fully fertilised before harvest.
Equipment & tools
Open an equipment page for what the machine does, how to set it up and how to operate it.
Alternative options
Low-cost equipment and wide working widths.
Uses sprayers and can share machinery with herbicide.
Useful when your farm already produces these materials.
Trades field time for a fertilisation stage without buying mineral fertiliser.
